OCC Mentoring Scheme
Membership of the OCC is obtained after a 1000+ mile ocean voyage but in order to fulfil the original raison d’etre of the Club “to foster and encourage ocean cruising in small craft, including all aspects of seamanship and navigation” a mentoring scheme has been put in place to assist those about to embark upon their first ocean passage and long distance cruising. We are a worldwide club and our members and mentors are based in Europe, North America, the West Indies and Australasia.
Most of our members would have appreciated more insight into the cruising life and long distance sailing before setting off but it was then and remains so today difficult to find impartial, practical and enthusiastic advice. We all have different areas that we wish to have advice upon as none of us is an expert in everything. We will therefore try and match our mentors as closely as possible with you.
We have members who have done the ARC, Caribbean 1500, Indonesia and Round the World Rallies, sailed circumnavigations by means of the Capes and the “Coconut Milk Run”, sailed as a singlehander, a couple, with friends or as a family with children, sailed with the seasons or as liveaboards. Their range and depth of experience is second to none and includes definitive expertise in navigation, communications, electronics, mechanical and electrical systems. Sailing long term as a couple can raise concerns about living away from family, dealing with friends and others visiting for short periods, provisioning and companionship. Our mentors include women ready and willing to advise.
All of our mentors are enthusiastic sailors and cruisers and want others to experience and enjoy the pleasures and satisfaction that they have from long distance sailing and cruising. They want to help you achieve the same.
The Mentoring scheme is open to any Associate Member of the Club. Please fill in the membership application form and then make contact for joining the scheme by using the 'Contact us' feature of this site.
