Matt Rutherford - The OCC honours him

24 April 2012 Jenny Crickmore-Thompson

Matt RutherfordMatt Rutherford, 30, completed an epic voyage from Annapolis up through the NW Passage, round Cape Horn and back to Annapolis, claiming the record for sailing his Albin Vega 27 single-handed non-stop around the Americas.

We followed www.solotheamericas.org and worried and fretted as things broke and fell apart!

The OCC has honoured this amazing feat of seamanship in this sturdy little boat with a special award recognising his iconic voyage. Sid and Rebecca Shaw, Regional Rear Commodores for the SE USA, were there to present Matt with his award at a ceremony held on the dockside as he stepped ashore. The event was live-streamed shortly after noon EDT on both the CRAB website and Matt's own website, and is still available on http://www.solotheamericas.org along with many photos of the event.

It was a trip worthy of an OCC accolade, one that brought to mind those entrepid travellers in the early days of Hum's Boys.
