Renewed warnings of pirate activity in the Somali Basin

Update 4th july 2010

UKMTO are now reporting frequent pirate activity north of Bab Al Mandeb, i.e. in the southern Red Sea itself.

EUNAVFOR, the command organisation which co-ordinates anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden and the Somali Basin, has issued a fresh warning of pirate activity during the week ended 20th March 2010.

1. The recent trend of pirate attacks over the last few weeks indicates that pirates are operating further and further south in the Somali Basin. Merchant ships and yachts are reminded to maintain vigilance in this area of increasing pirate presence. One vessel was attacked 150 nm north of Madagascar. Although multiple RPG and AK 47 rounds were fired, the vessel successfully avoided being boarded by pirates. There have been no confirmed attacks within the IRTC (the corridor between Aden and Salalah) this week.

2. Currently there are just 6 vessels held by pirates, including the Lynn Rival, belonging to the Chandlers. The Authorities expect an increase in pirate activity in coming weeks as the pirates attempt to increase their stock of capture vessels and so their income from ransoms.

The advice to yachts contemplating entering the Somali Basin or Gulf of Aden is: stay away. Yachtsmen who do decide to make a passage through these waters should follow the guidelines issued by EUNAVFOR, which can be found at:
