EDITORIAL

I've just been transferring the NEW MEMBERS section onto my computer (yes, Avril does send it to me on disk, but as we don't use the same software programme it needs a little tidying) and have been struck by how many new people we are welcoming to our club this autumn. I hope you all get as much pleasure from your membership of the OCC as I have. Secondly, a word of congratulation to all those `established' members who proposed and seconded. New blood is essential to any fellowship, a point which it's all too easy to forget. Thirdly, could I remind everyone of the existence of the DAVID WALLIS TROPHY, awarded annually for the most valuable contribution to Flying Fish; and all new members of the QUALIFIER'S MUG, presented by Mary Barton on her retirement as Commodore for the most ambitious or arduous qualifying passage each year. Although there's no actual requirement that this should be written up for Flying Fish, the Awards Sub-Committee are not mind-readers and it helps a lot to know more than merely that you sailed from Tonga to New Zealand in a 38 footer.

Observant members will have noticed that the last couple of Newsletters have sported photographs, several of them recording happy OCC gatherings in various parts of the world. There's always been a slightly hazy line as to what should go in the Newsletter and what in Flying Fish, but as a general rule rally reports should now go direct to Jeremy, photos and all. Okay, so I know there's an account of this summer's Azores Pursuit Race in this issue, but every rule is made to be broken occasionally!

Finally, other people illustrate their pieces with their favourite photographs so I don't see why I shouldn't. Those who have made it down to Falmouth will recognize Wrestler of Leigh, my combined yacht-home-office in her winter quarters. The pretty little dinghy alongside is evidence that I really do de-hibernate for the summer and move out to a harbour mooring (else why would I need a dinghy?). I just don't seem to find time for much cruising these days!

PS: I knew I'd forgotten something. The deadline for FLYING FISH 1995/1 is 31 MARCH 1995. Happy Christmas to you all --I can almost hear those carols drifting across the harbour at Bequia -- and do keep in touch.
