THE 1994 AWARDS

Geoff Pack, Chairman Awards Sub-Committee

AWARD OF MERIT -- Jo Hunter, Chanson de Lecq

The Award of Merit this year goes to Jo Hunter for her spirited introduction to yachting and ocean sailing by making a successful high latitude passage, singlehanded, from South Georgia to Cape Town in her recently-purchased Contessa 32.

BARTON CUP -- Mike and Pat Pocock, Blackjack

Mike and Pat have this year won the Barton Cup, recognising the completion of an impeccably-executed, seven year, 70,000 mile circumnavigation which often took them off the beaten track and which other members could enjoy through their regular contributions to Flying Fish.

RAMBLER MEDAL -- Hugh Clay, Aratapu

Unconventional though it is for the OCC to make an award for a member's racing activities, the Rambler Medal is this year presented to Hugh Clay for his keen participation in both Three Peaks Races, held in Tasmania and Wales. That he unquestionably used the skills and familiarity with Aratapu gained by cruising her eastabout between the two events to put in an impressive result in the latter race justified this popular nomination.

ROSE MEDAL -- Bill Perkes, Sherpa Bill

Bill Perkes is the worthy recipient of the Rose Medal for his recent circumnavigation in his evergreen Excalibur 36 Sherpa Bill, a voyage which although not always singlehanded was planned, prepared and completed with commendable precision.

OCC AWARD -- Harold and Kwailan La Borde, Hummingbird III

Trinidadians Harold and Kwailan La Borde have won the OCC Award in recognition of many years spent world cruising, commencing in 1959. From the start this has been in the best traditions of the OCC, without fuss, in self-built vessels and making many friends along the way. An article about the La Bordes, written by Hugh Cownie, appears in this issue.

DAVID WALLIS TROPHY -- Dr Michael Sandberg, Chant de Mai

The David Wallis Trophy is awarded for the year's most `valuable' contribution to Flying Fish. Few articles could fit this description better than Dr Sandberg's clearly written Medical Notes for Ocean Cruisers (Flying Fish 1994/1), which partially resulted from an Atlantic cruise during which he was frequently consulted by fellow yachtsmen in need of medical advice.

Neither the Water Music Trophy nor the Qualifier's Mug were awarded for 1994. Members are requested to send in their nominations for all the Awards (other than the David Wallis Trophy) for consideration by the Awards Sub-Committee. Details of requirements for each Award appear on page 12 of the current Members' Handbook. Recommendations should reach the Club Secretary or the Chairman of the Awards Sub-Committee by 30 November at the latest.
