Data Compression and GPRS incl set up for Turkey

Any slow comms is doomed. We use GPRS via a mobile phone and a program called ONSPEED in most countries- see http://onspeed.com Onspeed compresses data transfer up to 8 times depending if you need graphics or not. Since you are paying for GPRS by the byte, the reasons for using onspeed are self evident. In Turkey it's an excellent service giving dial up speeds.

Settings in MOBILE Phone. - Turkcell "Pay as you go type" SIM when in Turkey

1. Call 0212 473 7878 - This is the Number where you find the English speaking Techies.
2. Tell them you want your phone GPRS activated. They will send Commands to your phone.
3. On arrival, save them. If phone screen says "No memory left- clear memory?" Answer OK.
4. Switch off phone, and on again. (re-boot)
Go to Settings
5. Scroll down to GPRS settings.
6. Active access point "Gprs internet"
7. Select "activate"
8. Press "Back"
9 Scroll to "Edit active access point"
10. Select. "Alias for access point" (Should be on screen)
11. Press rename:Screen reads New Alias: "Gprs internet" (2005Mar)- 2004 just "Internet"
12. Press OK.
13. In Phone menu 'Services' go to ho,me. Should connect.

They also told me to change the pin no to '1234'
See http://www.oceancruisingclub.org/images/stories/Noticeboard/gprsturkey.pdf The attached pictures show the steps to get on Turkish GPRS via a mobile. We use Bluetooth that seems faster and means you can leave the Mobile anywhere on the boat.

That's it.
NB: The real hicup I found using Win 98SE is finding the correct Com Port.
Take note of "Virtual Infra Red Port" picture -That's what you are looking for. Keep going at New Hardware in Control panel until you get it right.

That means cruisers can have Internet access in any anchorage in Turkey, and often some in Greece too.

XP is written in a different way, especially since SP2 eliminated many programs available on Win 98. Bill Gates had his wonderful idea to make even more money by licensing software to use his operating System. That means for instance, Nokia who produced that excellent handset 6310i - so good for battery life and bluetooth/modem operations on Win 98 will not work with XP. Bluetooth operation for the 6310i with XP is not successful. So, until things change we use another laptop loaded with Win 98 OS. Everything then works fine. The Turkish .gifs that explain the GPRS setup are for that OS. To recap on XP. We have had XP going on bluetooth, but the system is intermittent and frustrating using MS software drivers. .Look up the Internet on this subject and you will find others make much the same comment.
Do not ask ordinary techies about GPRS in places like Cyprus or Turkey, they do not understand it. You must find only one or two people who understand the system. Once you get this going, it's like a miracle. With Onspeed, it also costs much less.

GPRS is no good for Skype or other VOIP. (Voice over Internet Protocol) For that you need Broadband or Wireless.
