I am hoping to retire soon and have an ambition to cross the Pacific Ocean. Done the Atlantic and now want to go on. Trouble is, for various reasons I find myself without a cruising companion or two. (Err. this is not a Lonely Hearts Ad, simply that in my view long term cruising is not about 'skipper' and 'crew' - rather companions). (PS My wife is supportive but is not doing the “hard” bits).
I have a nice, seaworthy and comfortable boat which is capable of reasonably fast passage times for her 20 tonnes. Personally, I have only about 35,000 sea miles experience including three logged passages above 1000 miles.
Outline plans are to leave the UK summer 2010 and cross the Pacific over the UK summer 2011. I have got my head around New Zealand and probably Australia the following year but really haven't thought through the next steps (which right now could as equally involve the Southern Ocean and Brazil as a container vessel back to the UK).
It occurred to me that there may be one or two members who would be interested and available to accompany me. They'd need to be 'fit and able', younger rather than older and capable of getting the boat back (with or without me) if I fall over board. Good company would help. There is no need for a commitment beyond the Caribbean (or if we are still speaking then New Zealand) - if things dont work, I will have to sort it out from there.
So - is there anyone out there and who might be interested i) in the trip and if so ii) in sailing in the UK with me this summer? Perhaps to the West Country Rally?
