MEMBER LEWMAR HATCH PROBLEM (10-2006)
Received from: Linda Morpurgo
Other members might need to know about a problem I am
experiencing on our yacht, a Beneteau Oceanis 36 cc. Fortunately
after we had crossed Biscay this summer, the hinges began to
snap, one by one. It looks like metal fatigue, but I'm no
engineer. All the hatches are potentially affected.

On return I took this up with Lewmar, who have been very helpful.
It is a known problem affecting a batch of hinges produced
between June 2000 and December 2002, with the Product Safety
Notice still on the website. Our yacht was commissioned and
built between November 2001 and March 2003, when we took delivery.

Apart from our personal inconvenience and expence, we are worried
that there are other vessels out there whose safety is about to
be compromised, perhaps fatally. I would urge anyone whose yacht
was built in this period to check with the manufacturer that the
correct product was used for the hinges. Ours all went within
days of each other. Scary!
