Pure Water

We are currently in Tenerife next stop Cape Verde Islands, Jan 08, where we hear the water is not always good. Apart from cleaning our water tanks with Milton we have never put anyting into the water. Have you any experience of adding water purifier tablets to suspect water?

Hi John

There is some forum chat out there about this subject, treat with caution as usual.

and info on activated carbon: http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs/h2oqual/watsys/ae1029w.htm

In a previous vessel (which had fibre glass tanks) I used both Milton (for cleaning and overwintering) and sterilising tabs added directly to the water. I found the tabs left a bit of a taste but no doubt did the job in terms of killing bugs and would be a good option for poor quality water.

In your situation faced with poor quality water I would add purification tabs, and then buy a combined jug and activated carbon filter locally from a supermarket before sailing. This would mean the tabs would kill bacteria, and then water passed through the jug system for direct consumption would remove any residual taste.

I found an inline carbon filter was the best long term solution but this was using UK tap water, where bacteria is not a problem.

Kind regards, Chris Cromey
